How You Define Wellness Is Important
How you define "wellness" is important. The ancient wisdom of Ho'ala Huna defines wellness as a place of "pono" a Hawai'ian word that means "the place of balance where life energy flows in harmony with Reality". It is the kind of health where the body's physical state exists in a state of dynamic balance with the person's mental, emotional, and spiritual states.

This wisdom teaches that the most important doctor is the intelligence built within your body, and the best medicine is whatever you can do to support your body's natural ability to heal itself in the most non-invasive way possible.

It also teaches the value of many proven and powerful natural therapies to detoxify and rebuild the body's organs and systems, rebalance natural body chemistry, and release and heal the destructive effects of various kinds of stress.

 What is Holistic Healing?
Holistic healing recognizes that when a person is not well, their mental, emotional, and spiritual states must all be considered along with their physical state if a lasting condition of wellness is to be restored. This is true "healing".

The form of holistic medicine we follow derives from Ho'ala Huna. It employs a method of spiritual healing known as Ho'opono'pono and physical healing known as La'au Lapa'au. Ho'ala Huna is so sophisticated and so grounded in Reality that the principles it illuminates are as valuable today as they were thousands of years ago.

One of Ho'ala Huna's first principles is:

"Belief is necessary only for that which is not real. That which is Real can be recognized because it works reliably and flawlessly."

That the body has a powerful innate ability to heal itself requires no belief. What does require belief is that you can be healed by a procedure that destroys, inhibits, or interferes with your body's ability to heal or protect itself. That symptom intervention is not the same thing as healing requires no belief. What does require belief is that a pill that reduces fever or congestion is promoting the healing process. In fact, it is interfering with that process because it is interfering with the body's ability to destroy the agents causing infection.

Modern medicine is an interesting mix. Scant attention is paid to the causative agents of disease like diet and sources of stress and lots of attention is paid to symptom intervention at the expense of healing. All the while technological advances have revolutionized diagnostic and surgical methods that can produce true miracles. It is almost as if the system is geared to helping people get so sick that only the most expensive measures can hold any promise of restoring some semblance of health.

Ho'ala Huna recognizes that the causative agents of disease can be internal or external. Examples of external causes of disease are things like physical injuries due to accidents or exposure to poisons or pathogenic organisms. Examples of internal causes of disease are things like lifestyle choices (smoking, poor diet, etc.), stress (caused by fear-based ways of looking at the world), and even the body's own natural aging process! While modern medicine can often be the source of valuable treatments for many external causes of disease, many of its treatments are either ineffective or counterproductive for internal causes of disease. That is where the patient must be willing to take far more responsibility for their own healing.

 What Is Natural Medicine?
Systems of natural medicine support the body to heal by itself by using remedies derived from nature. For thousands of years, human beings have found all the medicines they needed for this purpose in their immediate environment. Many of these remedies are powerfully effective, so much so that many of today's pharmaceuticals have been derived from them.

Natural medicine incorporates many therapeutic modalities including the use of vitamins, minerals, amino acids, glandulars, herbs, medicinal mushrooms and homeopathics, as well as the use of cleansing and detoxification therapies, nutritional therapy, hydrotherapy, exercise therapy, physical therapy, massage therapy and lifestyle counseling. Additionally, Chinese forms incorporate acupuncture and acupressure.

It is important to realize that just because something is natural doesn't mean it is safe! Some substances are highly toxic when taken internally. Others are dangerous for pregnant women or nursing mothers. Still others can cause dangerous allergic reactions in susceptible individuals, or cause dangerous interactions in people taking pharmaceutical medications.

Natural medicine can be extremely effective, not only at keeping you well but also at healing diseases that are often considered "terminal" by western medical doctors. We have personally witnessed many people becoming completely free of cancer after turning away from chemotherapy and radiation treatments and employing natural medicine protocols proven effective for the purpose. In fact, often the most dangerous thing about the choice to use natural medicine is the reaction of those in government who can't or won't accept the fact that such modalities can be of any value at all much less work better than their highly profitable (patentable) approaches.

 Limitations of Conventional Medicine
While natural medicine seeks to heal imbalance that leads to disease, modern forms of conventional medicine generally seeks to combat the symptoms of illness by using synthetic pharmaceuticals or invasive therapies like surgery. These methods can be highly effective for their purpose and have established themselves as an important tool in the modern person's quest for health. However, they are only a piece of the puzzle and not the whole answer. Because their purveyors have accumulated great financial strength they have also managed to accumulate great political power. They use that power to do everything they can to discredit their far less profitable competition, and use governmental agencies to keep natural medicines and their practitioners from demonstrating their value.

The result is that today, we have a health care system in crises. Health care has become so expensive that millions of people have no access. Even if you have health insurance you may not qualify for certain necessary diagnostic procedures or treatments because some bean-counter for the health insurance company doesn't want to pay the bill for you. A brief trip to an emergency room can result in a hospital bill that means financial devastation. If you make it into a hospital, abuse of antibiotics have created strains of "super-bugs" that make hospitals one of the most dangerous places you can go if you are ill.

Pharmaceutical companies are out of control. They create demand for their products by incessant advertising designed to turn our people into a nation of hypochondriacs. They develop medicines that are poorly tested in human applications and cause so many side-effects that those who take them get far more ill over time - not better. Vioxx and other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs relieve pain but cause heart attacks. Cholesterol lowering medications strip the body of needed nutrients and cause congestive heart failure. Hormone replacement therapy that relieves hot flashes but causes cancer. Drugs used to keep kids calm and focused cause them to become suicidal or homicidal and shoot up their schools. The list is endless. This spawns an endless stream of lawsuits, doctors have to pay huge malpractice insurance claims.
