Multi-level marketing companies are notorious for making outrageous claims for electrolysis units that purport to make alkaline water that supposedly can cure everything from cancer to baldness. Because of the pyramid marketing structure, these units cost 10 times what they should. But the problem is not just the outlandish prices. Not only do these products do nothing to remove pathogenic organisms or many dangerous contaminants, but they also concentrate many dangerous toxins like arsenic, mercury, and chloramines back into the product water. This is just one example of many over-hyped and underperforming class of products.
Even large companies with big reputations offer products that are way overpriced and market them with information that while technically accurate, is incomplete.
There is no reason to pay over $5,000 for a water softener combined with a reverse-osmosis system when better quality products are available for half that price, yet many people do because of the marketing tactics of many industry giants.
Most of the "big box" or department and hardware stores that sell water treatment products are staffed by people who have no idea what their products do or what their limitations are. This wouldn't be so bad if these salespeople admitted it. The problems start when people act as if they know what they are talking about when they really don't. This is an industry where "a little knowledge can be a dangerous thing."
Certain "big name" companies aggressively market filters that mount to faucets or refrigerators, or sell filters that fit on top of water pitchers. Unfortunately, they way they are advertised it is unlikely that most of the buyers of these products realize that these carbon based units do little more than improve the taste of water. Most harmful contaminants pass right through these things. Not only that, but the filter elements must be changed every couple of weeks or they can become the breeding ground for huge colonies of bacteria and other pathogenic organisms.
In other words, while there are many reputable water treatment dealers and products, many customers are not getting the benefits they expect. When that happens, our whole industry suffers.

Nor are we interested in people whose primary marketing approach is to sell lots of products offering deep discounts. On the other hand,
